The Director of Micropropagation will play a critical role in developing the plant tissue culture business for Canivate Growing Systems Ltd. and its licensee(s); a role which will include personnel management, quality management, compliance, safety, continuous improvement and business development. Initially the Director of Micropropagation will be responsible for planning and implementing the Company’s first micropropagation facility; developing a plan for both third party customers as well as ensuring sufficient inventory is produced for the Company’s initial facility. Once the initial facility is established, the Director of Micropropagation will lead the expansion and implementation of multiple micropropagation labs in the Company’s facilities as it expands globally.
The position requires a “hands on” type of manager, experienced in various forms of in-vitro micropropagation and propagation techniques. The incumbent will oversee the employment of a range of aseptic plant culture techniques including but not limited to media preparation, culture initiations, culture transfers for line maintenance, acclimating cultures to the greenhouse, plant growth and manipulation techniques, lab and clean room maintenance, SOP and protocol development/modifications and safety procedures. As leader of the lab team, the incumbent will work to support the tissue culture activities that impact the Canivate projects and production schedules; explore and recommend opportunities to develop third party commercial business; and will interact with other professional staff.
We are seeking candidates who possess, at minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in Plant Tissue Culture, Plant Science or a closely related field (agriculture, biology) from an accredited college or university, and minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience including in a commercial plant tissue culture lab. Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills are required. In addition to extensive knowledge of laboratory operations, including experience in creating and writing lab and worker safety procedures, SOP’s and protocols; practical problem-solving skills and the ability to develop business cases which include financial analysis are essential to the role. The candidate should have excellent organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to thrive in an efficient, highly interactive, goal-oriented commercial production environment, and be able to effectively supervise and manage team members on a daily basis. Possession of a valid work visa to be able to legally work in Canada or the U.S. and a valid passport to travel internationally for company collaboration and meetings are required.
